JAPANESE FOOD IN SINGAPORE

Otoko Restaurant

This unique 2-storey restaurant is located at Upper Serangoon Road, it is small but quiet, even on a Saturday afternoon. Great for private conversations with family and friends. However, if you are claustrophobic or generally dislike cramped places then this is not for you. The ordering counter and kitchen is on the 1st storey, so after you ordered you must climb up the narrow stairs to the 2nd storey to eat. It may not be suitable for aged people who have mobility problems. However, the good news is you do not have to go downstairs again to collect your food at the counter, it will be served to you at your table.

Cornflake Tori Karaage with Nacho Cheese

Pieces of fried chicken are covered entirely in cornflakes. Seriously, this is purely for someone with strong teeth. I literally thought my teeth will crack when I bite into one. It tastes good but there is nothing special about it. Just fried chicken with cheese. Cornflakes have no taste, it is just an extra barrier that makes it difficult for me to get to my chicken. It is like fried chicken with hard shells.

Chicken Cutlet and Bacon Potato Curry Rice

At this place, you can customise your own curry rice by choosing the sides you want to add to it. Not an adventurous eater, I opted for the safe chicken cutlet and Bacon Potato. I chose to add cheese to it as well. The cheese turned out to be just a normal square piece of cheese that you could buy at NTUC for cheap. It’s a pretty cheesy cheese for a restaurant if you know what I mean.

The chicken cutlet is pretty good, crispy and juicy. I highly recommend the Bacon Potato for potato-lovers. The potato is crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. It has a slight saltiness from the bacon. Overall, the curry rice tasted exactly like Monster Curry, only that this is a much smaller portion. If you are a small eater, this will be just nice for you.

How much I paid for the above meal:
Curry Rice - $2.80
Chicken Cutlet - $2.80
Bacon Potato - $2.80
Add Cheese - $1.00
Cornflake Tori Karaage with Nacho Cheese - $10.80

Verdict: 5/10
There was just nothing special about it. A forgettable place.
